Pregnancy

Being pregnant is the most important 9 months of your life, and the little person inside you too. Keeping fit and healthy is essential to ensure the 9 months go smoothly. Of course the birth is going to be hard and you are dreading the birth. This guide will help you to have a happy and calm pregnancy.

Keeping fit-

Before you start a plan on ways to keep fit, make sure you consult your doctor, if you have suffered a miscarriage before it isn’t advisable to be doing so much during. Once you have the go ahead from your doctor, there are many different ways to stay active and be happy.

Yoga is a good way to practice your breathing when giving birth and it’s also a nice way to relax. Finding a class is also a great way to meet other mothers to be and talking about your experiences so far. Some positions are not suitable for the pregnancy but there are others you can try.

Swimming is great for your whole body. It increases your stamina, it tones up the muscles and it’s another way to relax. Getting your partner involved is a great way for you both to be prepared if you want to have a water birth.

Walking is definitely a great way to keep more active. You can go for walks in the parks, to the shops and also it’s another way to control your breathing when you get out of breath. Instead of driving places, meet up with some friends and have lunch and walk to your destination locally, but don’t tire yourself out too much as you won’t want to do much after that.

Lastly water aerobics is a mixture of normal swimming and low impact aerobics. Many pregnant women go to water aerobics, which are run by midwifes and also to loosen up your body and most of the time they are anti-natal classes to prepare for water births. Again partners are welcome.

Eating healthy is an essential. Knowing what to eat and not to eat can be difficult and hard to give up your favourite foods. Here are just some of the essentials you need to eat during the pregnancy:

Oily foods, which include: fresh Salmon, and sardines. This may not sound so appetising but if you have a lot of dry skin during the pregnancy, the fish makes your baby grow healthier and it reduces the risks of premature births. Other fish like tuna can harm your baby so it is best to avoid them.

Lots and lots of fruit. Eating fruit is as normal as not being pregnant, apple and banana’s are both high in vitamins and according to mothers they are great ways to overcome morning sickness.

Red meat helps women get more iron in their blood, having less iron in your blood makes you feel tired and unwell, but if you are a vegetarian...

Greens are always the way to go. You can never go wrong with green foods; the best greens to eat are broccoli, cauliflower and radishes. Without the essential greens in your diet your child could be in danger of getting spina bifida. Also with greens, you can eat dried fruit, eggs, nuts and wheat germ.

Of course there are many foods you cannot eat as they may cause threats to your baby. Not just food, but other activities too. They include: (starting with the food)

Raw meat and sushi. All the uncooked food has a high risk of getting salmonella and listeria poisoning and sushi doesn’t contain any nutrients.

Raw eggs. All raw eggs also contain salmonella. Most dressings such as mayonnaise contain raw eggs so they should be avoided at all costs.

And of course alcohol, it has been documented that mothers who drink and also smoke during pregnancies have children with foetal abnormalities.

Apart from the foods, these are some activities you should be avoiding to have a safe pregnancy. They include:

Cleaning the cats litter tray. This may sound like a weird one but it’s true. Cat’s poo can carry Toxoplasmosis which is very harmful to you and your child. It can cause brain damage and retarding growth to the child.

Painting the nursery. We all know you have been looking forward to painting it the colour when you have found out the sex of your child, but painting isn’t good for you. The toxins in the paint can make you dizzy and faint. It’s also a god excuse to make your partner do all the work so you can relax.

Wearing heels. Throughout your pregnancy your bump is going to be getting bigger and bigger. Gravity won’t be nice to you so if you fall or trip this is very dangerous to you and your baby. Also hells can give you a massive back ache from not being level with the ground.

The Birth

Preparing for the birth can be exciting yet nerve wrecking. Not knowing when your little person wants to come into the world, you should always be prepared. Having your bag ready with all the essentials is necessary. You won’t have time to pack when you are in great pain. Here are the essentials for your bag or bags:

A going home outfit for you, not going home in the clothes you wore on the way to hospital is just wrong. You need comfy clothes to keep you warm and comfortable. Not forgetting the nursing bra for easy access for your baby when you breastfeed.

For the baby: sleeping suits preferably from ages 0-3 months depending on how big your baby is, mittens to keep their precious hands warm, booties and socks to keep their little feet warm, bibs so they don’t throw up all over their clothes, a nice warm blanket for when they leave the hospital into the car and for the journey home, nappies and lots of them. Your baby will be pooing more often when they are born to get rid of the waste in their belly’s and lastly cotton wool when cleaning their bums.

Nightwear clothing for you. Having an open top has again easy access to the breasts for the baby and more comfort for you too.

Slippers and socks for yourself. Walking around the bed to your baby when the birth is over, you wouldn’t want to walk on the cold floor of the hospital, make sure you get nice and warm ones.

After the birth, you can become very tired, having snacks nearby is a great way to keep awake and in contact with your partner. Having chocolate and some high energy drinks are also helpful.

Lastly some toiletries, making sure you have your toothbrush, comb, face cream and essentially some luxury toilet paper for the sore areas.

Forgetting something is definitely every expecting couple will expect. There will always be something small or important that will be left behind at home which you need on the day. If you are calm and prepared everything will go well.
